The Umbra app
Umbra is in internal testing. It is not on the App Store yet, so there is no download link here — a badge that went nowhere would be worse than none.
Working today
- Calculated positions
- Topocentric bearing, altitude and angular size for Jupiter, Saturn and the Moon, from your location and chosen time.
- Live, Grandeur, Beyond
- Live uses natural angular size. Grandeur keeps the calculated bearing and enlarges the body. Beyond is artistic and labelled as such.
- On-device rendering
- A native Metal renderer draws the body over the camera feed. Frames never leave the phone.
- Camera compositing
- Rear-camera passthrough with a sky boundary, plus scale, vibrance and sky-depth controls.
- Capture
- Save a still to your photo library. Sharing only happens when you choose it.
Not yet
- Accounts
- Sign-in, recovery and cloud sync are not implemented. The app runs as a guest.
- Video
- Still capture works; synchronised video recording does not.
- Glasses
- No hardware transport exists. The app shows “Not connected” and a labelled simulator.
- Android
- Not released. The astronomy core is staged, but no Android build has shipped.
